Have you ever had wandering mind when you pray? It happens a lot in my prayer life. It happens to the best of us. Martin Luther experienced it obviously otherwise he wouldn't have named it, "mindless chatter." Most of the time, I would say, "Oh, I can't really focus today," and cut my prayers short. Today, as I was getting frustrated by the wandering mind, I came across these short meditations. It helped me to focus my mind back on the Lord. I hope these help you too!
The pious ones of old used to wait a whole hour before praying, the better to concentrate their minds on God.
What does a Rabbi do before praying? I pray, was the reply, that I ma be able to pray properly.
Prayer means a consciousness full of God's presence and our relationship with him.
Out of depths I have called to you, O Lord (Psalm 130:1): Anyone praying before the Holy King must pray from the depths of his soul, for then his heart will be entirely directed to God, and his mind entirely bent on his prayer.
I will wait for the Lord, my soul waits.
And in his word I will put my hope.
My soul waits for the Lord
More than a watchmen wait for the morning More than a watchmen wait for the morning.
O your name, put your hope in the Lord
(Psalm 130:5-7a)
